India in Tokyo Olympics Day 6: Pooja Rani, the Indian boxer defeated Algeria’s Ichrak Chaib in her opening bout and made it to the QFs in her maiden Olympic Game.
Pooja Rani (75kg) punched out Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in her opening bout to enter the quarterfinals of her debut Olympic Game on Wednesday. The 30year old Indian won it 5-0, dominated her rival who was 10 years junior to her. The two-time Asian champion was in complete control of the match and also got benefitted due toIchrak Chaib’s lack of balance in the ring.
The Father of Pooja Rani (a police officer) did not want his daughter to pursue the sport as her career as he felt boxing was a sport meant only for aggressive people.
As quoted in NDTV Sports, “Maar lag jaegi (you will get hurt). That’s what my father said. He insisted that the sport was not meant for me because, in his mind, boxing was pursued by aggressive people,” she had recalled in an interview to PTI detailing her journey.
Deepika Kumari has won her Round 16
Deepika Kumari has won her Round 16 match and has moved into the quarters which is scheduled to be played tomorrow. Tarundeep Rai, Pravin Jadhav lost and finished their Olympics tour in the Round of 32.
PV Sindhu Won the match and avanced to last 16
PV Sindhu has won an easy match, winning the match in straight games against Hong Kong’s NY Chueng, Sindhu will be facing Mia Blichfeldt in the Round of 16.
Sai Praneeth, who got eliminated, lost his final match to Netherlands Mark Caljouw. It was a straight-game defeat for Sai Praneeth.
