India lost in the semi-finals of the Olympic 2020 hockey Men’s tournament against Belgium. The Indian men’s hockey team had qualified for this semi-final match after 1972. Belgium team scored a goal in the second minute. Following that, the Indian team players started to play aggressively, and as a result, India’s Harmanpreet scored an important goal in the 7th minute of the match.
Then, Mandeep Singh scored the next goal immediately to give India a lead 2-1. India was on top after the goal struck by Mandeep Singh. But India was shocked to see the response from the Belgium players who an attacking and aggressive game that was followed by a hat-trick from Belgium’s Alexander Hendriques to give Belgium an unmatchable 4-2 lead.
John-John Domen of Belgium scored another goal to seal the game for the Belgium side as the Indian players were never allowed to score and were stopped by the Belgium player’s strong defence whenever they tried to score a goal. At the end of the match, the scores were settled at 5-2 and Belgium won the semifinal of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and through to the final.
Now the Indian hockey team will have to play either Australia or Germany for 3rd place after losing in the semi finals. India is set to compete for the bronze medal on Aug 5th. The Indian team started well and looked promising to keep up the good work, but lost momentum in the last quarter and that is where the Belgium team held onto the match.
The Indian defence was put under immense pressure by the Belgians as they got as many as 14 penalty corners from which they converted four into goals. Belgium’s game plan was pretty clear as they tried to earn penalty corners by entering the Indian circle with Hendrickx and Luypaert in their teams, it is an easy job for them to go and get the penalty corners as they desired.
