India lost their 3rd ODI against Sri Lanka but clinched the ODI series 2-1.
India was 2–0 up against Sri Lanka after winning the first 2 ODIs and was playing with the 5 debutants in the third and last ODI of the series. Earlier, India handed over maiden ODI caps for Nitish Rana, Krishnappa Gowtham, Rahul Chahar, Chetan Sakariya, and Sanju Samson.
India ‘s Innings
Shikhar Dhawan who was the stand-in captain won the toss for the first time in the series, which is his first-ever toss win as a captain for the Indian team. The stylish left-handed batter chose to bat first and India off to a flying start scoring 23 runs in the first two overs but India lost their first wicket in the third over bowled by Dushmantha Chameera and caught by Bhanuka after scoring 13 of 11 deliveries.
Sanju Samson started cautiously and scored his first boundary on the 13th ball he faced on the other hand Prithvi Shaw dominated the Sri Lankan bowlers and scored effortlessly with his timing and placement before getting out LBW by Shanaka for 49 runs off 49 balls. Then Manish Pandey joins the party with Sanju Samson and in the meantime, Sanju Samson scored some important runs for the team with the run-a-ball strike rate.
Sanju Samson got out for 46 runs of 46 deliveries after playing a lazy shot through extra cover in the over of JayaWickrama caught by Avishka Fernando. Then Manish Pandey has gone for 11 runs followed by Hardik Pandya for 19 runs. India was struggling at 179 for 5 wickets at 28.3 overs in a rain-curtained 47 overs a side contest.
India needed a good partnership and Indian fans Wanted someone to score big to get to a decent total but what followed was a shocker for the Indian fans when Surya Kumar Yadav was gone for 40 runs at the end of the 30th over. Like adding salt to the injury, Akila DananJaya picked up 2 wickets in the same over to limit India for 195 for 8 in the 33rd over.
After that, Rahul Chahar and Navdeep Saini played some sensible cricket to take India to a decent total of 220 Plus at the end of the 42nd over. In the process of getting some quick runs, Rahul Chahar was dismissed caught and bowled by Karunaratne for 13 runs. Finally, India has been bowled out for 225 runs in 43.1 overs Sri Lanka needed 226 runs to win the match.
Sri Lanka’s Innings
Sri Lanka started off their chase well needing only 4.8 RPO and scored 35 runs at the starting of the sixth over before losing their first wicket of Bhanuka to the debutant Krishnappa Gowtham after scoring 7 off 17 deliveries. Then Rajya paksha and Avishka Fernando stitch together a very well-made partnership of 109 runs for the second wicket. Another debutant Sarkari broke the partnership by dismissing Rajapaksa in the last ball of the 23rd over for 65 runs with Sri Lanka needing another 82 runs with 8 wickets in hand.
Within a span of a few overs, Sri Lanka went on to the position of nearly losing the match from a strong position of needing 82 runs with their wickets in hand. Sri Lanka lost three wickets for 40 runs which put them in a position of nearing 31 runs with 5 wickets in hand at 32.4 overs.
Dhananjaya De Silva, Asalanka, and Shanaka fell in quick sessions for 2,24 & 0 and Sri Lanka was in a spot of bother at 195 for 5 in 32.4 overs. Avishka Fernando Ramesh Mendis made sure that Sri Lanka gets to the target without any further loss of wickets but Rahul Chahar struck twice in the 37th and 39th over to restrict Sri Lanka to 220 for 7 wickets. The Sri Lankan dressing room was tensed at this point of the match with India pressurizing the Sri Lankan batsman by keeping more fielders closer to the Batsman. But Akila Dhananjaya made sure that the Lankans win the third match of the series and the dead rubber by scoring a boundary of the first ball he faced and a single on the next ball to ease the tension of the dressing room. Finally, Ramesh Mendis scored the winning runs and this Three-wicket victory lifts SL off the bottom of the ODI Super League points table and India wins the series 2-1.
This is the first series win as a coach for Rahul Dravid and also as a captain for Shikhar Dhawan. India is now placed at the fourth position in the ODI super league points table. India is scheduled to play 3 T20Is against Sri Lanka starting from July 25th at Colombo.
