The Women in Blue beat the Aussies by 1-0, only a solitary goal which was scored by the drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur who rose to the occasion when it mattered the most and converted India’s lone penalty corner in the 22nd minute of the match to stun the mighty Australian team and proved a point to the world that they’re not here to see the other teams win, they are here to win.
Inspiring victory from India Men’s hockey team
This win happened a day after the Indian men’s team qualified for the semi-final of the Olympics after 49 years and similarly, they also had to defeat a strong Great Britain to make history. Their last semifinal berth was in the year 1972 and this is the first time they are into the semifinal after 49 years.
This win by the Indian men’s team a day before the match of the Indian women’s day looked like a morale booster for the Indian women’s team as they chose to write their names in the same history books followed by their male counterparts.
Earlier, India lost to the Netherlands in their first match by a big margin of 1-5, and in the next match, they lost to Germany by 0-2 and were beaten by Great Britain for 4-1. At this point, India’s chances looked bleak and they looked to be out of contention for a semi-final berth.
But there comes the fightback from the Indian women’s team. They beat Ireland by 1-0 and in the next match they won an important match against the South Africans by 4-3 to be in contention for the semifinal of the Tokyo Olympics 2020. They were in a situation to face Australia and they had to beat them in order to qualify for the semifinals.
They rose up to the situation and won the match by 1-0 to qualify for the first time in the history of the Indian women’s team. India women’s semifinal will be played on August 4th and their opponent is yet to be decided.
