Ashwin, Team India’s ace spinner who has taken 413 wickets in Test cricket with 30 five-wicket hauls and 7 ten-wicket hauls. Despite such performances, the experienced spinner is being avoided in English conditions by the current team management, coach, and captain.
The Off-spinner excelled in the spin bowling department during the Dhoni era and was molded by the captain himself and the then coach Gary Kirsten by giving some important chances to prove himself and the much-needed confidence for a player when the player is not getting wickets. Ashwin was the go-to man for Dhoni during his period of captaincy.
Whenever Dhoni needs a breakthrough, he turned towards the Ashwin, whether in Tests or ODI’s or T20’s. R Ashwin delivered most of the times when Dhoni looked up to him. That’s how a player should get the backing from the captain and that’s how a player will always respond to the captain’s backing. Whenever a captain backs a player for India, it always ended up giving the team an excellent player of a different caliber.
From Virender Sehwag to Rohit Sharma to Rishabh Pant, all these players were backed by their captains to an extent, and look how they delivered. Even the former captain Dhoni himself is a product and result of the backing from the then captain Sourav Ganguly. That is how a good captain backs their supreme players and gets the best out of them.
Is Ashwin not getting the support from Kohli?
Considering the support the former captains gave their main players, R Ashwin seems to be not getting the backing from the current coach and the captain. Whenever India tours SENA countries, Ashwin is being dropped for various reasons starting from the pitch conditions, team combinations, and the inclusion of extra fast-bowling all-rounder in the SENA conditions. There has been plenty of reasons for the exclusion of Ashwin in the team India XI.
Even Ashwin was playing for the county teams to get the required match practice in England grounds and to get adapted to the England weather and to get comfortable with the Duke ball played only in England. Yes, Ravi Ashwin is doing all the work he can do to get a spot in the team’s XI but misses out every time in the playing XI.
Considering the amount of hard work he is giving, let’s see how well he has fared in the county games he played in the past and in the current season.
Ashwin has picked up 61 wickets from the 10 games he played for different county cricket teams. This tally includes 7 five-wicket hauls and also he scored 533 runs with the bat. With such kind of performances in the English conditions the spinner is always ahead of his other competitors like R Jadeja, S Thakur in the current lineup.
All Ashwin needs is the backing from the current Indian team management and the captain. But for now, we all can hope that Ashwin at least plays the next game so that he at least can be rewarded for the extra efforts for playing some good cricket in the County games. A player of his caliber needed to be supported and backed by the captain and coach.
So this article isn’t the statement of Kohli not backing Ashwin rather It’s a question from the hearts of cricketing fans all over the world “Why Ashwin is dropped despite playing county cricket?“. Let’s hope that Ashwin plays the rest of the series and performs well to make India win the series and also gets a good backing from the team management and the captain in the future.
